Impacts of climate change on persons with disabilities:
Climate change seriously affects people's lives as well as the environment. The fight against climate change and the protection of human rights are closely related to each other within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN until 2030. Human rights are seriously undermined by the impacts of climate change in key areas such as food security, water supply, health and living conditions. The Paris Climate Agreement (2015), the UN's main framework document in the field of combating climate change, also emphasizes the protection of human rights.
Related topics provide an important opportunity to deepen our understanding of the links between climate change and human rights. Climate change, global warming and an increase in extreme weather situations lead to many human rights violations. These effects tend to have greater consequences in the most vulnerable societies.
The impacts of climate change disproportionately affect people with disabilities. It violates the rights of persons with disabilities, including food and nutrition, safe drinking water and sanitation, health services, medicine, education and training, adequate housing, and access to decent work.
